The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test widely accepted by universities and colleges in the United States and other countries. It is designed to evaluate a student’s academic readiness for college. If you’re planning to study abroad, particularly in the U.S., understanding the ACT is a crucial step in your application process.
What is the ACT?
The ACT measures a student’s skills in four core academic areas:
- English: Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills.
- Mathematics: Covers algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and problem-solving skills.
- Reading: Evaluates comprehension and reasoning skills.
- Science: Focuses on interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving in the natural sciences.
There is also an optional Writing (Essay) section that evaluates a student’s ability to develop and support an argument in a written format.

The total test duration is around 3 hours and 35 minutes with the Writing section included.
ACT Scoring System
The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36 for each section, with the composite score being the average of the four sections. The Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 2 to 12.
