What is the TOEFL Exam?

The TOEFL exam evaluates your English language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It is designed to test your academic English skills, particularly those needed in university environments, such as reading academic texts, writing essays, listening to lectures, and speaking on various topics.

There are two main formats for the TOEFL:

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) – The most commonly used format.
  2. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) – Available in locations where internet-based testing is not available.

TOEFL Score Validity

TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years. It’s important to plan your test date accordingly, considering university deadlines or visa applications.

How to Prepare for the TOEFL Exam?

  1. Understand the Test Format: Familiarize yourself with the test sections and types of questions you’ll encounter.
  2. Practice Listening and Speaking: Expose yourself to academic English by listening to lectures, podcasts, and talks. Practice speaking by recording responses or with a speaking partner.
  3. Improve Vocabulary: Work on expanding your academic vocabulary, as this will help in reading, writing, and speaking sections.
  4. Take Practice Tests: Use official TOEFL practice materials or prep courses to simulate real test conditions.
  5. Develop Time Management Skills: Practice completing each section within the time limits to avoid running out of time during the actual test.
  6. Consider Professional Coaching: If necessary, enroll in TOEFL prep classes for structured guidance.

TOEFL Scoring System

  • Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing: Each section is scored from 0 to 30.
  • Total Score: The sum of the four sections gives your overall TOEFL score, which ranges from 0 to 120.
  • Subscore: You will also receive individual scores for speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
