IELTS Exam Format

The IELTS exam is divided into four sections, and the test takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to complete:

IELTS Scoring System

  • Band Scores: IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale, with 9 being the highest score. A score of 6.0 or above is typically required for university admissions.
  • Score Descriptions: The scores reflect proficiency levels:
    • Band 9 – Expert User
    • Band 8 – Very Good User
    • Band 7 – Good User
    • Band 6 – Competent User
    • Band 5 – Modest User
    • Band 4 – Limited User
    • Band 3 – Extremely Limited User
    • Band 2 – Intermittent User
    • Band 1 – Non-User
    • Band 0 – Did not attempt the test

Your final score is the average of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), and each section is given equal weight.

IELTS Registration Process

  1. How to Register: Register online on the official IELTS website. You can choose between the Academic or General Training module depending on your needs.
  2. Exam Fee: The registration fee ranges from $215 to $250, depending on the country you are taking the test in.
  3. Documents Needed: You will need to provide a valid passport or national ID when registering and on the test day.
  4. Test Dates: IELTS is offered multiple times a month at designated test centers worldwide. You can select a date that works best for you.
  5. Score Report: You will receive your IELTS scores within 13 days of taking the test. You can send your results to up to 5 institutions for free. Additional score reports are available for a fee.
